Happenings at Digipede
[West Coast Grid] In addition to the Digipede booth, the Microsoft booth, and the HP booth, there was an "HP/Microsoft break room;" a place for private meetings with customers. They had built a screaming little 16-processor cluster (Microsoft CCS and Digipede Network on ProLiant servers with dual Opterons), and they were showcasing Excel Services, our software, and the interoperability thereof.

Digipede: New whitepaper available
[A Day in the Life] When you see things go quiet here its pretty safe to assume that Im working on a white paper. I just cant seem to write for my blog while Im working on a paper.

Digipede at SIA ” Big show, big partners, big news
[Powers Unfiltered] There are booths in the ballrooms, booths in the exhibit halls, booths in the hallways, booths in the pretty much every location but the restrooms (and they crowd right up against those, too). In the exhibit halls, the feel is pretty much “big trade show;” in the hallways, the feel is more “Middle-eastern street market,” or, during peak hours, “mosh pit.” Many of the major vendors have realized that the “mosh pit” environment is not...

The Future of Grid Computing: A look into my crystal ball
[A Day in the Life] When it happens there will be an explosion of new applications and the rewriting of old ones. I believe this because we (computer users) have been demanding, getting, and using increased processor speed and more responsive operating system architectures.

Computers get slower every day
[West Coast Grid] Now, combine this ever-increasing network speed with Jim Gray's observations about distributed computing: "Keep the computation near the data." But the corollary is, when you take into account increasing network speeds, "Your data is getting closer and closer every day." In other words, because networks are getting faster and faster, it makes more sense to move data to more processors in order to work on it.

Book: Patterns: Emerging Patterns for Enterprise Grids
[virtualization.info] Another book from IBM Redbooks department, this time on grid computing designing issues: Patterns are great vehicles to capture components with a high degree of commonality among engagements and to express their interrelationships. Although most enterprise grid engagements are typically deployed with solutions that could be categorized as "one-of-a-kind", there is enough information gathered today to allow us to devise a set of common components among them and to derive enterprise grid patterns.

Skip the Prizes ” Win Valuable Customers
[Powers Unfiltered] Since early 1999 (at least), there have been prizes related to grid computing. There were prizes offered by RSA to crack various encryption methods. There were prizes offered by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to find the first prime number with more than a million digits (and there’s still one for ten million digits outstanding). There were bubble-era startups that offered cash prizes for participation in other grid projects while they fumbled around looking for an actual business model.

Programming Perl (3rd Edition)
[Linux Web Developer] But the book's title implies that it is meant as an introduction to Perl, but an introduction it just ain't! The authors say as much themselves in their introduction, but I think the unsuspecting novice deserves to see it on the front cover too.

Why is the Digipede network good for Windows environments?
[Wes Maldonado: Data Junkie] Why not use the wasted cycles on all those existing machines in your corporate network rather than increasing the total amount of energy used? If you want to install N computers in a data center, cool them all, power the switches and all the new hardware to save energy, go for it.

[Powers Unfiltered] a matchmaking event where many VCs get together to hear many startups give short pitches. I gave two 20-minute presentations about Digipede this afternoon, which is never bad practice, and I ended up with quite a few new contacts as a result. (Many thanks to Cliff Reeves for making introductions on our behalf;

The Coming Battle Over Grid Computing and Internet Services
[The Hive Archive] He posted on Digipede, a Windows centric way to do distributed computing and I responded that it would be “nice” not to be forced to do this type of work on an operating system that required a GUI. That set off another post about cost effectiveness and using existing infrastructure, points I dont disagree with.
