[Pragma-grid.net] PRAGMA has been founded as an open organization in which Pacific Rim institutions will collaborate more formally to develop grid-enabled applications and will deploy the needed infrastructure throughout the Pacific Region to allow data, computing, and other resource sharing. Based on current collaborations, PRAGMA will enhance these collaborations and connections among individual investigators by promoting visiting scholars' and engineers' programs, building new collaborations, formalizing resource-sharing agreements, and continuing trans-Pacific network deployment.

0 for 8
[Expert Texture] I’ve been really out of the loop lately (hurtling towards a code freeze has a tendency to do that to me), so one thing I did tonight was to catch up on my reading. I was reminded about the The Eight Fallacies of Distributed Computing as enumerated by Peter Deutsch (thanks, Kevin Burton):

on-demand computing - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: OD ...
[Searchcio.techtarget.com] Jason Bloomberg, Senior Analyst with ZapThink, says that on-demand computing is a broad category that includes all the other terms, each of which means something slightly different. Utility computing, for example, is an on-demand approach that combines outsourced computing resources and infrastructure management with a usage-based payment structure (this approach is sometimes known as metered services).

Evolution of grid computing architecture and grid adoption models
[Research.ibm.com] There are important architectural implications related to the grid adoption model, in light of the fact that all distributed systems require developers (of both infrastructure and applications) to consider the unpredictable latency of remote access. This means developers must take into account issues of concurrency and the possibility of partial failure.1 Grid computing aims to resolve these complexities of distributed computing through a well-defined architecture that is aligned with SOA, autonomic-computing principles,2 and open standards for integration and interoperability.

Kicking a Half-KLOC
[West Coast Grid] K evin Burton (of TailRank) posted yesterday saying "Number of blogs is the new KLOC." KLOC stands for thousand lines of code; his post makes a very good point that the number of blogs that a site indexes is not necessarily the best measure of how good that index is--and draws a parallel to Steve Ballmer noting that tracking a developer's KLOC fails to track how useful it can be to eliminate lines of code.

[Memagazine.org] The specter of terrorist attacks across multiple power grids exacerbates the uncertainty inherent in the complex array of decision-making variables faced by utility operating engineers. But as engineers and managers maximize the value of their investment in computer networks, distributed sensors, and secure communication systems to make better, safer, and more profitable operating decisions, the threat of terrorism raises a fundamental dilemma for improving energy infrastructure performance and safety.
