[Nappies and networks] Nappies and networks: Cloud computing: I was having a rant the other day about cloud computing (hi Richard, hi Robbie) being mostly vaporous nonsense, when Richard said it could be useful as a way of putting a technical concept into words that a non-technical business leader could understand, and allow them to see how it relates to their business. So I thought I would compile an industry overview from top technology leaders on "what is cloud computing?".

[Sam Johnston] Sam Johnston: The Intercloud is a global cloud of clouds: Although I think it's got a snowflake's chance in hell of displacing the Internet moniker, it may be useful for framing discussions about cloud computing interoperability and unlike many of the other terms that have popped up may actually serve some purpose (surely IBM of all people should know that whenever someone says "CloudBurst" $GOD kills a kitten).

The real answer is, inevitably, "I don't know--somewhere on the East Coast of the U.S. or Western Europe," which makes some customers very uncomfortable. This lack of knowledge of your servers' location, however, provides an interesting physical security benefit, as it becomes nearly impossible for a motivated attacker to use a physical attack vector to compromise your systems.
