Gridget > Computers get slower every day
[West Coast Grid] Now, combine this ever-increasing network speed with Jim Gray's observations about distributed computing: "Keep the computation near the data." But the corollary is, when you take into account increasing network speeds, "Your data is getting closer and closer every day." In other words, because networks are getting faster and faster, it makes more sense to move data to more processors in order to work on it.

[Rittman.net] Mark Rittman's Oracle Weblog: July 2004 Archives: Other highlights are that it's server side (so your dump files are stored on the server, not on the local PC, cutting down network traffic), it's able to run in parallel, and it can be used to export data directly into another Oracle server (known as 'network mode'), cutting out the intermediate dump file. Other areas covered included Flashback Database (useful for recovery, referred to as 'rewinding the database' although it won't help with media failures), enhancements to incremental backup (no need to scan each block now for changes, as changes are logged using 'block change tracking'), and the news that transportable tablespaces now work across operating systems.
