The only way to get out of the guidelines as a typical matter is to impute income to the noncustodial parent (so, if he has a demonstratedly high earning capacity, you could set child support based on what he *could* be making–this is a necessary provision since, though I found it hard to believe when I started in this practice area, a surprising number of men actually quit their jobs when the other parent starts enforcing child support obligations).
