[UgoTrade] The image above is the Shenlei Winkler’s, avatar (Shenlei is CEO of Fashion Research Institute, Inc.), photographed in the OpenSim Shengri La region in the Shengri La Bliss sim, part of FRI’s 9 sim grid. Shenlei Winkler (Shenlei Flasheart in Second Life) is leading the way with IBM in making OpenSim fit for business and in using OpenSim to develop new technologies for the $1.7 trillion apparel industry, (see my upcoming interview with Shenlei to learn more about her work and vision).

[ugotrade] “OpenSource, Interoperable Virtual Worlds” at VW 2008, LA: Fashion Research Institute is considered by many one of the most advanced business cases on OpenSim (more about Shenlei Winkler, CEO of FRI, in my next post, “Meet the Rising Stars of the Open Metaverse at VW 2008.” .
[Shengri La: Utopian Micronation] Rambling Through OpenSim: Last week, Black Dress Technology’s sys admin, Frank Clark, brought up the OpenSim Shengri La grid inside the Fashion Research Technology firewall. With 9 regions, it provides us a degree of freedom for testing, content development, prototyping, and of course, our actual work in developing enterprise virtual worlds applications. The entire operation went smoothly, from instantiating the first region, to bringing up the additional 8 regions, to adding in the RAW files and terrain files.
[justincc's opensim blog] A brief survey of emerging uses for OpenSim: Much of this activity is similar to the way that educators already use Second Life on the Linden Lab’s grid. However, though the server software isn’t yet up to the same quality as Linden Lab’s servers, it has the advantage of allowing you to let teens, children and adults on to the same simulator (which I believe isn’t allowed in Linden Lab’s Terms Of Service). It also allows you more control the education experience (for instance, there’s a much lower chance of avatars wandering off elsewhere, or encountering unwelcome visitors). And, of course, you can have as much land as you like (give everybody their own region!), though you will either have to host it yourself or find someone to do it for you.
