[Rhizome Inclusive: News, Blog, and Digest] Whenever the fountains are plugged in, the Linux PC's will automatically boot up and run World Community Grid software, a distributed computing project which uses a massive network of PCs around the world to model solutions for various humanitarian problems, such as: “Clean Energy Project”, “Influenza Antiviral Drug Search”, “ Fight Aids@home” and “Nutritious Rice for the World".

[Hello, Architekt !] AR Wave: Layers and Channels of Social Augmented Experiences ...: Tish Shute: One of the things I found very inspiring when I read your papers was that your ideas are not all dependent on a model of AR that would necessarily require goggles, back packs and lots of CPU/GPU %u2013 not that that wouldn%u2019t be nice, but that even using %u201Cmagic lens%u201D AR of the kind smart phones has enabled in an open distributed framework would open up a lot of new possibilities for what you call modulated mapping wouldn%u2019t it? What kind of social augmented realities might be enabled by a distributed infrastructure like this [AR Wave]?

[Jeff Vail - Rhizome and the emerging terrain of the 21st Century.] Rhizome - Jeff Vail - Law, Energy, Geopolitics, and Organizational ...: In reality, even to just replace the oil (which, in the US, is a very small %) used to generate electricity, we will need to 1) invest in significant transmission infrastructure, and 2) invest in storage capacity (or even greater transmission infrastructure to smooth out the intermittency of wind and solar). I haven't seen any good studies that compare this additional investment to the 33% efficiency of oil-fired electricity, but it may well make up the difference (meaning that there is no savings by generating electricity directly), and at a minimum it will mean that the net effect is less than a 3:1 savings.
[Jonathan Belisle] AR Wave: Layers and Channels of Social Augmented Experiences ...: locative media got a buzz for %u201Creading%u201D places%u2026when I helped create locative narrative that was what blew me away back in 2001%u2026that we could give places a voice by placing data from research and icons on a map%u2026%u2026this meant lost history or augmentation was possible as kind of voices of a place and its layers%u2026%u2026.I called it %u201Cnarrative archaeology.%u201D We now have tools that can push these ideas and concepts farther..much farther%u2026and with a range beyond what was before, and then the map was just a tool%u2026.but now we are returning to the map itself%u2026..and this as place as much as marker..this is where ar takes the ball to use a bad metaphor
