Gridget > Roadmap for US-China cooperation on climate change | East Asia Forum
[East Asia Forum] and its per capita emissions are 78 per cent lower (although China’s per capita emissions are growing at a rate four to six times as fast as those of the United States). Despite China’s rapid economic ascendancy, it remains a developing country (albeit a strong, emerging economy), with a per capita income 30 per cent lower than the world average, and an enormous rural population living on far less.

[New Energy World Network (newnet)] newnet knowledge bank - Low Carbon Energy: A Roadmap: Advanced automotive, electronics, and buildings systems will allow a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, at negative costs once the savings in energy bills is accounted for. The savings from these measures can effectively pay for a significant portion of the additional cost of advanced renewable energy technologies to replace fossil fuels, including wind, solar, geothermal and bioenergy.
[Guardian Weekly] Climate and energy: Clinton visits China - Guardian Weekly: The travel plans offer further evidence that Obama plans to undo Bush’s policies on climate change negotiations much as he has begun to do in the domestic arena. Obama delivered early action on the environment in a number of executive orders, restoring regulatory powers to government agencies weakened by Bush.
[South Maui Sustainability] Defining Sustainability-From Ray Andersons Interface Inc. « South ...: Forum For the Future recently defined sustainable development as ”a dynamic process which enables all people to realize their potential and improve their quality of life in ways that simultaneously protect and enhance the Earths life support systems.”
[Zee News : India National] Text of Presidents address to Parliament: The signing of the Agreement on Cooperation on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy with USA was one of the manifestations of the transformation in our relationship with the United States of America. Our relations with the USA cover a broad canvas of sectors ranging from science and technology, agriculture, education, health to trade and investment.
[East Asia Forum] China running out of coal? | East Asia Forum: Although there has been some movements and money spent in China for various renewable sources, I think the conversation can safely turn to the issues related to nuclear power. Renewable energy would be hard pressed any time soon, to say the least, to satisfy China’s requirements and growth.
[The Oil Drum - Discussions about Energy and Our Future] The Oil Drum | DrumBeat: February 9, 2009: US No 4 Occidental Petroleum said, it was slashing capex by 25 per cent, while Russias fourth-largest oil producer, Gazprom Neft, said it could cut by 45 per cent. In contrast, US number 2, Chevron Corp said it was holding capex steady and the worlds second-largest non-government controlled oil company, Royal Dutch Shell said it would raise spending on projects by 5 per cent in 2009.
[EthicalMarkets.com] Earth Policy News - Creating New Jobs, Cutting Carbon Emissions ...: If the world is to have a decent chance of saving the Greenland ice sheet and at least the larger glaciers in the Himalayas and on the Tibetan Plateau, the glaciers whose ice melt sustains the major rivers and irrigation systems of Asia during the dry season, then global carbon emissions need to be cut 80 percent by 2020. For the United States, this might require up to $500 billion of federal funds to mobilize $2 trillion of private capital–for a total $2.5-trillion investment in renewables and efficiency by 2020.
[Greenpeace Forum: Louder Than Words] 2500 Year Old Invention to Reverse Global Warming - Greenpeace ...: Jim Amonette, a soil geochemist at the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory estimates that biochar would halt the rise in CO2 if we could biochar 8% of the Earth’s annual biomass, while Green and Black co-founder Craig Sams has calculated that just 2.5% of the world’s productive land were used to produce biochar then we could end the rise of CO2 emissions.
[Seed Magazine] Seed: Report From Dubai: Global emissions, it is agreed, must drop 50 to 85 percent by 2050 if average global temperatures are not to rise 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. But how do you reach that goal, when emissions from the developing world are rapidly growing to keep pace with development, when deforestation in poorer countries continues to account for 20 percent of global emissions, and when failed trade talks mean a slower transfer of cleaner technologies to developing countries?
[CleanTech Blog - CleanTechies.com] Mercury rising, controls next | CleanTech Blog - CleanTechies.com: “The mercury attaches to the carbon particles and is removed in a traditional particle control device. Several other control technologies to reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants are being developed and tested but have not yet been deployed at the commercial scale.”

[CleanTech Blog - CleanTechies.com] Carbon Emissions - no effect on climate change? | CleanTech Blog ...: Not too long ago I had a discussion with a family member who is an ardent disbeliever of the equation “Increased CO2 Emissions = Climate Change”. I appreciate that camp’s perspective, though as I said over lunch with a friend - it is far better to use the fear of climate change to propel us into action, than procrastinate and have to identify an interim solutions to satiate our energy demand. Hopefully, with some time and a bit of foresight we can develop sustainable solutions that make social and political sense and not swing from one untenable lifestyle to another.
[Community.GJSentinel.com] Community.GJSentinel.com » Blog Archive » Global warming: man-made ...: There are even ways to differentiate among human-induced causes. As an example, the New York Times reports that in a study using Carbon 14 isotopes, investigators determined that the brown haze often overlying large parts of Southeast Asia in the winter is largely due to the burning of biomass (home cooking, jungle and field clearance) rather than the burning of fossil fuels.
[Winds of Change.NET] The 3% Solution - Winds of Change.NET: Frankly, I'm still not 100% convinced that CO2 emissions is the main driver of climate change (it could be solar output, some other factor, or it may just be an observational blip that will go away mysteriously, as did the observational blip that got everyone in the 1970s thinking that global cooling was kicking off an ice age). But my point is that emissions are actually going down in a per capita sense already, and will probably go down faster now that people are paying attention to the issue.
[The Hill's Blog Briefing Room] The Hills Blog Briefing Room » Inhofe Calls Gores Climate ...: If Al Gore would just stop trying to spread the cult religion of "Climate Change" or "Global Warming" or whatever the faithful are calling it now to "make it work", he would single-handedly reduce any and all hot air emissions coming out of his mouth and thus fix the perceived "climate" problem:)
